Understanding Interoception and Why It Matters for Your Health

"I thought I was coping... until I wasn't."

It's a sentence many people say after they've experienced burnout, persistent fatigue or overwhelming anxiety.

Looking back, they can see the signs were there all along. They just didn't recognise them at the time. The restless sleep. The racing mind. The digestive issues. The short temper. The feeling of always being "on." Their body had been communicating for months—sometimes years—but they hadn't yet learned how to listen.

Many of us have become experts at looking after everyone else while ignoring ourselves. We keep pushing through fatigue, telling ourselves we'll rest after the next deadline, after the school holidays, or once life finally slows down.

The problem is... Our bodies don't stop communicating just because we're too busy to listen.

In fact, they're communicating with us every single second of every day.

The question isn't whether your body is speaking.

It's whether you've learned how to hear it.

Scientists call this remarkable ability interoception, and although most people have never heard the word, it may be one of the most important senses you've never known you had.

More Than Five Senses

When we were children, we learned about the five senses.

Sight. Hearing. Taste. Touch. Smell.

These senses help us understand the world around us.

But there's another sense quietly working in the background that receives far less attention.

It tells you when you're thirsty.

When you're hungry.

When you're cold.

When your heart starts racing.

When your breathing becomes shallow.

When your stomach tightens before an important conversation.

When your shoulders have crept up towards your ears.

When you're emotionally overwhelmed.

This internal awareness is known as interoception—your brain's ability to receive, interpret and make sense of signals coming from inside your body.

Think of it as your body's internal communication system.

Every heartbeat.

Every breath.

Every flutter in your stomach.

Every wave of calm.

Every moment of tension.

Your body is constantly sending messages to your brain about what's happening inside.

Most of the time, you don't consciously think about these signals.

Your heart beats without you asking it to.

Your lungs breathe automatically.

Your digestive system quietly goes about its work.

Yet behind the scenes, your brain is continuously monitoring all of this information to help keep you alive and functioning well.

It's an extraordinary system.

Your Body Is Always Gathering Information

Imagine driving a car without a dashboard.

You wouldn't know whether you were running out of fuel.

You wouldn't see the engine overheating.

You wouldn't know if the oil pressure was dangerously low.

Eventually something would go wrong—not because the car failed to communicate, but because you couldn't see the warning signs.

Interoception works much the same way.

It's your internal dashboard.

It allows you to notice the subtle changes happening within your body before they become much bigger problems.

Perhaps you notice:

  • you're becoming hungry

  • your breathing has become fast and shallow

  • your jaw is clenched

  • your shoulders feel tight

  • your heart is beating faster

  • your energy is beginning to dip

These aren't random sensations.

They're information.

Your body is constantly trying to keep you in balance—a state scientists refer to as homeostasis.

Interoception helps your brain recognise when something is changing so that it can make the necessary adjustments.

The fascinating part?

Many of these signals never even reach conscious awareness unless we intentionally pay attention.

Research suggests that information flowing from the body to the brain plays a much larger role in our emotions, decision-making and behaviour than scientists once believed. Rather than the brain simply telling the body what to do, it's a constant two-way conversation.

Why We Stop Listening

If interoception is something we're born with, why do so many people feel disconnected from their bodies?

The answer isn't because the body has stopped talking.

It's because modern life has become incredibly good at drowning it out.

Think about a typical day.

Your alarm goes off.

You check your phone before getting out of bed.

You're already thinking about work, school lunches, emails, appointments, dinner and everything else on today's to-do list.

You rush out the door.

Eat lunch at your desk.

Answer messages while cooking dinner.

Collapse onto the couch exhausted.

Then wonder why you can't switch your mind off when it's finally time to sleep.

Throughout the entire day, your attention has been directed outwards.

Towards responsibilities.

Towards other people.

Towards deadlines.

Towards notifications.

Towards everyone else's needs.

Very little attention has been directed inwards.

Many people become so accustomed to living this way that they stop recognising the early signs that their body needs something.

They don't notice hunger until they feel shaky.

They don't notice tension until they develop a headache.

They don't notice fatigue until they're completely exhausted.

They don't notice stress until they're lying awake at two o'clock in the morning wondering why they can't sleep.

This isn't because they've failed.

It's because somewhere along the way, they've lost touch with one of the body's most important communication systems.

Your Body Whispers Before It Shouts

One of my favourite reminders is this:

The body rarely begins by shouting.

It whispers.

Maybe it starts with waking up feeling slightly less refreshed than usual.

Perhaps your neck feels a little tighter after work.

You find yourself sighing more often.

Your patience feels shorter.

You skip lunch because you're too busy.

You notice you're relying on another coffee just to get through the afternoon.

Individually, these things don't seem particularly important.

So we ignore them.

We tell ourselves:

"I'll slow down next week."

"Once things settle down..."

"After this project..."

"When the kids are older..."

Weeks become months.

Months become years.

Eventually, the whispers become harder to ignore.

For some people, that's persistent fatigue.

For others, it's anxiety, digestive issues, chronic muscle tension, burnout or recurring pain.

Of course, symptoms can have many different causes and should always be appropriately assessed by your healthcare provider. But regardless of the underlying cause, our symptoms often invite us to become curious about what our body is trying to communicate rather than simply wishing they would disappear.

That's one of the most powerful shifts we can make.

We can begin asking:

"What might my body be trying to tell me?"

That simple question changes everything.

What This Means for You

Learning to notice your body's signals doesn't mean becoming hyper-focused on every ache or sensation.

It means developing a gentle awareness.

A relationship.

A conversation.

Because when you notice the whispers, you often have an opportunity to respond before your body needs to shout.

Why Interoception Matters for Your Nervous System

If you've ever found yourself thinking,

"Why didn't I realise how stressed I was?"

The answer may have less to do with willpower and more to do with how your brain and body communicate.

Interoception doesn't simply help us notice physical sensations—it also plays an important role in emotional regulation, decision-making and how our nervous system responds to the world around us.

Think about the last time you felt nervous.

Before you consciously recognised the emotion, your body had probably already begun responding.

Your heart may have started beating faster.

Your breathing became quicker.

Your stomach tightened.

Your muscles became tense.

These physical changes are not separate from your emotions—they're part of them.

Research suggests that our brains don't just create emotions in isolation. Instead, they continuously combine information from our body, previous experiences and our environment to help us understand what we're feeling and decide how to respond.

One of the key brain regions involved in this process is called the insula.

Meet the Insula: Your Brain's Inner Sensing Centre

Hidden deep within the brain is a remarkable structure called the insula.

You may never have heard of it before, but it's constantly working behind the scenes.

The insula receives information from throughout your body—your heartbeat, breathing, digestion, muscle tension, temperature and countless other internal signals—and helps your brain make sense of them.

In many ways, it's like an interpreter.

It takes the language of the body and translates it into awareness.

This is one reason interoception influences so much more than physical health.

It also shapes how we experience emotions, recognise stress and make decisions.

Have you ever had a "gut feeling" about something?

Or sensed that something didn't feel quite right before you could explain why?

Those experiences are thought to involve interoceptive processing.

Your body often notices changes before your thinking mind catches up.

Researchers now believe that emotions are closely linked to our awareness of what's happening inside the body. In other words, learning to notice physical sensations may also strengthen emotional awareness and resilience.

When Stress Drowns Out the Signal

Imagine trying to hear someone whisper while standing beside a busy highway.

That's a little like what can happen when your nervous system has been under prolonged stress.

Your body's quieter signals become harder to notice beneath the constant noise of everyday life.

You might stop recognising hunger until you're absolutely starving.

You may not notice tension until you develop a headache.

You may only realise you're exhausted when your body forces you to stop.

This isn't because your body has stopped communicating.

It's because chronic stress can reduce our awareness of the subtle cues that help us regulate ourselves.

For some people, stress leads to becoming disconnected from bodily sensations altogether.

Others experience the opposite—they become highly aware of every sensation, interpreting even small changes as potential threats.

Both experiences reflect changes in the way the brain and nervous system process information from the body.

Rebuilding the Conversation

The encouraging news is that interoception isn't fixed.

Like learning a new language or strengthening a muscle, it can be developed with practice.

Every time you pause to notice your breathing...

Every time you recognise your shoulders are tense...

Every time you acknowledge that you're tired instead of pushing through...

You're strengthening the communication between your brain and body.

These moments may seem small, but they matter.

Over time, they help create greater awareness, allowing you to respond to your body's needs earlier rather than waiting until stress becomes overwhelming.

This is one of the reasons so many nervous system regulation practices begin with awareness.

Not because noticing solves everything.

But because it's difficult to care for a need you don't realise exists.

Simple Ways to Strengthen Interoception

Improving interoception doesn't require hours of meditation or dramatic lifestyle changes.

It begins with paying gentle attention to your body throughout the day.

You might try asking yourself:

  • What do I notice in my body right now?

  • How is my breathing?

  • Where am I holding tension?

  • Am I hungry, thirsty or tired?

  • What emotion might these physical sensations be connected to?

There are many practices that may help strengthen interoceptive awareness, including:

  • Slow, diaphragmatic breathing

  • Mindfulness and body scan meditations

  • Gentle yoga or stretching

  • Walking in nature

  • Tai Chi or Qigong

  • Journalling physical sensations alongside emotions

  • Taking regular pauses throughout the day to check in with your body

These practices aren't about becoming hyper-focused on every sensation.

They're about rebuilding trust in your body's ability to communicate clearly.

Where Kinesiology Fits

One of the reasons I love kinesiology is that it encourages people to slow down and reconnect with what their body may already be communicating.

Rather than focusing solely on symptoms, kinesiology takes a whole-person approach, recognising that physical, emotional and environmental stressors can all influence wellbeing.

Using gentle muscle monitoring alongside a range of balancing techniques, kinesiology aims to identify areas of stress and support the body's natural ability to restore balance.

For many people, one of the greatest benefits isn't simply feeling calmer after a session.

It's developing a deeper awareness of the subtle signals their body has been sending all along.

When people begin recognising those signals earlier, they often feel more empowered to respond with self-care, healthy boundaries and nervous system regulation strategies before stress accumulates.

Healing Begins with Listening

Perhaps your body has never stopped communicating.

Perhaps life has simply become too loud to hear it.

Every tight shoulder.

Every deep sigh.

Every flutter in your stomach.

Every wave of fatigue.

Every moment of calm.

These aren't inconveniences to ignore.

They're information.

Interoception reminds us that our bodies are not working against us—they're constantly working for us, doing their best to maintain balance and keep us safe.

The more we learn to notice these signals with curiosity rather than judgement, the more opportunities we have to respond with compassion instead of simply pushing through.

Healing doesn't begin when your body becomes silent.

It begins when you start listening.
